Every bright bar starts life as a black bar — hot-rolled steel straight from the rolling mill. The difference between the two comes down to what happens after rolling.
Black Bars (Hot-Rolled)
Black bars are produced by hot rolling and are left with:
- A rough, scaled surface (mill scale)
- Wider dimensional tolerances
- Less consistent mechanical properties along the length
They're perfectly suitable for applications that will be further machined all over, or where dimensional precision isn't critical.
Bright Bars (Cold-Finished)
Bright bars start as black bars and go through cold finishing — drawing, peeling, turning, or grinding — which:
- Removes mill scale, leaving a smooth, bright surface
- Tightens dimensional tolerance significantly (h9 to h6 depending on the process)
- Improves straightness
- Increases yield and tensile strength slightly due to cold working
- Improves machinability and surface finish
